Welcome Back and Important Reminders

Welcome Back!
It was a fantastic start for our students in grades 1-4 these last couple of days! Even though it was a wet start, they are making this a great time for getting to know each other and their teachers, learning the routines and expectations, and starting a fun and productive school year. We look forward to having our kindergarten students join us soon!

Special Area Rotation Days A - D and Elementary Menu/Calendar
Parents, There was a mistake on the original Elementary Menu and Calendar. This year, the elementary schools will be using A, B, C and D days to reflect our Special Area rotations. This was not listed correctly on the Elementary Menu/Calendar. The district has now made the change, so please feel free to access and print a new one if need be. You can easily access this calendar by directly visiting Elementary Menu and Calendar

Or going to www.sycamoreschools.org; then go to “Schools”; then select “Blue Ash Elementary”. Next you will click on “For Students” ; select “Menus” and then scroll down to “Sycamore Elementary Breakfast and Lunch Menu (includes special days!)

Important!!!! Final Forms Updates
Parents, it is very important that you log on to Final Forms to verify or update all information on your child(ren)....even if there are no changes from last year. This resource is used to ensure that we have current contact information, emergency medical information, and information regarding transportation to and from school. You must visit Final Forms via the link Final Forms

Or you can go to www.sycamoreschools.org ; link is at the top, right of the page. If you used Final Forms in 2015-2016, you simply need to verify that the information is still correct and make any necessary changes. If you have not used Final Forms in 2015-16, you can create a parent account and fill out the online forms for yourself and your children.

If you do not have access to the internet, you can stop by our front office at any time and access a laptop to complete the process.

Changing how your child is getting home?
We understand that some days your child may need to follow a different dismissal procedure than what they regularly do. If you need to make a change regarding how your child will be getting home, please make sure that you send in the “Parent Communication Form” (available at front counter or you can print them off online). Please DO NOT call after 3:00 with changes to your child’s dismissal unless it is a sudden change or an emergency. This is a busy time for our front office and it can be difficult to ensure the change is communicated to all affected in time.

Fall MAP/MPG Testing
Students within grades 2-4 will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments, first graders take the MPG, in reading and math during the week of September 6-9, 2016. These assessments occur three times throughout the year. From these assessments, teachers receive data to influence their instruction. From assessment results, teachers are better able to create flexible groupings, adjust time spent on certain topics, provide additional scaffolding for students, set goals for class/individual growth, and reflect on teaching practices. Please be mindful of scheduling appointments, vacations or missed school days around the assessment schedule.

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Incidences
In an ongoing effort to provide a safe learning environment, Sycamore is requesting parents, students, and staff to inform administration (or whoever) of any perceived incidences of harassment, intimidation, or bullying.

Per the Sycamore Board of Education policy JFCF, harassment, intimidation, and bullying are defined as any provoked and intentional written, verbal, electronic or physical act that a student has exhibited toward another particular student more than once and the behavior both:

1) causes mental or physical harm to the other student
2) is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student.

To view the complete policy, visit www.sycamoreschools.org, under the Board of Education tab, scroll down to “Policies”, search for policy “JFCF”.

Sycamore will do everything possible to address any complaints of harassment, intimidation, and bullying.

We encourage students, staff, parents, and community members to report this type of behavior to the district if help is needed to solve a problem.

To report an incident of harassment, intimidation, and bullying:
1) Go to the website,www.sycamoreschools.org
2) Under the tab “Forms”, scroll down until you see the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Incident Reporting Form for the individual schools.
3) Fill the form on-line and submit it electronically.
4) Hard copies of this form are available in each of the schools.

Complete the hard copy of the report form and turn it into the building Principal. The building principal or designee will promptly investigate all reported incidences.

It is difficult to investigate reported incidences that are anonymously submitted. However, every effort will be made to maintain the confidentiality of the reporter. Deliberate false reporting of harassment, intimidation, and bullying is prohibited.

Sycamore GEAR

FUN RUN!

From our PTO:

We have 4 days before our Fun Run! So far we have raised $1,575 we are doing great, but need to raise $3425 more so that we can turn Mrs. Combs into a human sundae. Remember, the top two students from each grade who have raised the most money get to pour ice cream, chocolate, caramel, strawberry topping, whipped cream, then, the top 2 students who have earned the most money in the entire school get to top her with maraschino cherries. This will be a fun time for everyone!

On Friday, April 29th we will have the Fun Run during the day at school. The children will start running in the field by the school then up to the playground then back down to the field. The entire run is about a half of a mile (according to Mapmyrun.com) and the students will run for about 15 minutes. When the 15 minutes is completed then they will have water and a banana to cool down. We need a lot of help cheering our students on while making sure they are being safe especially on the playground area. Everyone is welcome to help out sign up here: http://tinyurl.com/baefunrun! If you have any questions please e-mail Debbie Flinchpaugh-Kirby at baefunrun@gmail.com.

For the Day of the Run, kids should wear comfortable clothing and shoes in which they can comfortably run. Please note we will be outside on the field and playground blacktop during the run it may be sunny. If it is rainy or we are unable to use the field, the Fun Run will take place on Field Day which is May 25th!

Mr. Hackett's Send Off

A Special Message From Greene School PTO:

Our beloved Mr. Hackett is retiring at the end of this school year. Mr. Hackett has been the principal of Edwin H. Greene Intermediate School since 1995, but his tenure at Sycamore Schools began more than three decades ago. He first arrived at Sycamore in 1988 as the principal of Maple Dale Elementary. He led the school for seven years before moving to E.H. Greene where he was named a National Distinguished Principal by the U.S. Department of Education. Under his leadership, E.H. Greene was selected as an Ohio School to Watch and as a Blue Ribbon School.

We want to give Mr. Hackett a loving send off and show him how much we appreciate all he has done for the Greene School. Please join us for a dessert reception on Wednesday May 11, 2016 from 7-8:30 pm in the Greene School Cafeteria. We are inviting the entire district to help celebrate Mr. Hackett’s retirement.

As a lasting tribute to his years of service, we would like to purchase a picnic table with umbrella to place near the Greene walking track in honor of Mr. Hackett. This table would be available for the entire community to enjoy. If you would like to donate toward this commemoration, please make your check donations payable to the Greene School PTO, and send it to the attention of Ann Margolis E.H Greene School, 5200 Aldine Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45242.

We look forward to seeing everyone on May 11th, to honor Mr. Hackett.

Carton2Garden

As many of you know, our school has entered the Carton 2 Garden contest.
Over several weeks our students and staff collected used paper milk or juice cartons and re-purposed them to enhance our school garden. The minimum cartons to be collected was 100 and our generous community collected 1,050 cartons! All students have contributed to this project by submitting their ideas on what to add to our garden, painting the cartons to prepare for construction, and putting them together for the final products. Their ideas included more flowers, window boxes, scarecrows and lattices.....and the reality is even better than we imagined!

We could not have done this without the leadership and support of Mrs. Tami Miller, Miss Gina Bush, and our fantastic parent volunteers. This was a true BAE community project!

THANK YOU!

Cultural Event Date Change

Dear Blue Ash Elementary families,

The PTO Chair of the Cultural Event has decided that it would be best to push the event back to May 20th. This is a Friday evening, which work better for most of our families and it will be a nice end of year celebration for our school! Thursday was not the best night, and this will allow for a bigger and better event, so please mark your calendars for Friday May 20th, 6-8:30 pm! Questions? Contact Kimberly Reese at 513-687-748.

Thanks!

ODE is Asking for your Feedback

Ohio’s learning standards in mathematics, English language arts, science and social studies are five years old. The Ohio Department of Education now is reviewing the standards to update them,if revisions are necessary. To get started, the department is asking educators, parents and other members of the public to review and give feedback on the math and English language arts standards.

Educators and parents have an opportunity to review and comment on these standards now through April 5 at ohio-k12.help/standards/. On the Ohio Department of Education’s Standards Revision Web page, a one-page overview for parents has been provided by the department.
